Brand Opens Up Cycling to People Again, Even Those Who’d Given Up

Growing up in Springfield, Penn., Rich Bastian raced bikes with his brothers and neighborhood friends countless times around the big Glendale Circle that was their world. And he didn’t give up the cycling bug when he grew up. “I’ve been riding bikes for 50 years,” says the proud owner of the new Pedego Electric Bikes store in Cape May.

Both Bastian and his parents have owned homes in the Cape May County town of Stone Harbor for many years, so he knew it was an ideal place for a Pedego store.

“There’s no better place to bike. It’s flat, and the scenery’s great,” he says, pointing out the store’s location near the center of town and less than a mile from the beach. Renters can ride along Beach Avenue for miles, north or south, the Atlantic on one side and a bustling corridor of shops, hotels and the Victorian homes the area is known for on the other.

Why Pedego? Bastian tells the story of his 81-year-old father, who’s struggled with cancer for several years and had to give up his regular cycling in Stone Harbor due to his new physical challenges.

“I kind of reluctantly asked him if he wanted to try my Pedego bike, and he said yes,” Bastian recounts. “I figured he was going to take a quick spin around the block, and in 15 minutes he still wasn’t back.”

When his father finally returned after about 20 minutes of riding, he told his son it was the greatest bike he’d ever ridden.

“He takes one or two bike rides every day for about five miles. There are a lot of people out there like him who wouldn’t be able to ride a bike, and now they can.”

Bastian himself can easily crest the long, steadily rising hill that separates his West Chester, Pa., home from his nearby brother’s, not even breaking a sweat astride his neon blue Pedego Boomerang.

“This is what this bike’s all about,” he says, pointing out the line’s sturdiness, pickup, acceleration and responsiveness as top winning features.

Pedego Cape May is a testament to the entire Bastian family’s regard for the brand. Bastian expects many of his relatives, including his wife, children, siblings and nieces and nephews, plus family friends, to help run the store. He’s also looking to expand Pedego’s presence down the shore to Wildwood and Ocean City next summer, with his eye on locations in Stone Harbor, Avalon and Sea Isle City in the next couple of years.
