Kurt Dawson and Danielle Mulvey, lovers of all things outdoors, happily stumbled across electric cycling in Southern California while operating a helicopter tours business.

When they spotted the Pedego Electric Bikes store in Carlsbad near San Diego, Kurt suggested a partnership with the store owner: He’d supply the helicopter if the store supplied electric bikes for a ride-and-fly service.

The couple, meanwhile, bought their own Pedegos, which they loved so much they rode them daily around San Diego, including to the beach for surfing.

“We loved how easy it was and that we didn’t have to drive,” Kurt says. “When we learned about the pedal-assist and the whole functionality of the Pedego, we were able to go to the Oceanside boardwalk.”

Pedego opened new adventure avenues for the outdoor enthusiasts, and it didn’t take long for the couple to see a new business opportunity, too—taking the plunge to close the helicopter business and move back to their home state to open a Pedego store in West Ocean City.

Ocean City’s 10-mile beachfront makes it the perfect spot to introduce people to electric cycling, says Kurt, who easily names three nearby cycling paths for Pedego renters: a 32-mile ride to and from Assateague Island; a 40-mile out-and-back spin along the coast on Highway 1 to South Bethany Beach; and a 25-mile ride along country backroads to and from downtown Berlin.

The bright Pedego store has a relaxed beach vibe of rustic woodblock touches and the couple’s young golden retriever helping out with sales. They hope to forge a partnership similar to the one they had in California to offer ride-and-fly service to customers interested in short coastline tours.
