Bruce Austin, 70, Uses His Pedego Ridge Rider to Rev up His Life

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 11, 2017 — Pedego® Electric Bikes is pleased to announce that it has been featured in the Wall Street Journal in the Oct. 9, 2017 issue. The article focuses on Pedego customer Bruce Austin, 70, who rides his Pedego Ridge Rider electric mountain bike to rev up his life at an age when most people are slowing down. Austin is a resident of Camarillo, Calif., north of Los Angeles, and is a semi-retired cinematographer and cameraman who has worked with Disney, TBS and Twentieth Century Fox.

An avid mountain biker since he was in his mid-30s, Austin rides his Pedego Ridge Rider at least 50 miles each week. Once per week he does a 30-mile “killer ride” on his Ridge Rider up a 1,200-foot incline in Big Sycamore Canyon north of Los Angeles, which he can complete in 90 minutes using the bike’s electric assistance. On the Pedego electric mountain bike, he bikes grueling trails with his sons, who are in their 40s. He also has a second Ridge Rider that his daughters, who are in their 20s, his wife and friends use to ride along with him.

“My electric bike is the great equalizer, empowering me to ride and keep up with my kids,” said Austin. “Mountain biking is a great family adventure that brings us closer together.”

Austin was motivated to stay fit and active for his family. His own father died of diabetes when Austin was in his mid-30s. He credits his Pedego electric bike with helping him stay in shape. He burns up to 500 calories per hour and can do more challenging rides in less time than on a traditional pedal bike. Along with a healthy diet and other exercises including swimming, stretching and weights, Austin is meeting his goals of staying fit through his 70s and beyond.

“Pedego electric bikes empower people to ride longer, farther and faster than they could on traditional pedal bikes, letting them get more exercise and relish the joys of riding together,” said Don DiCostanzo, CEO and co-founder of Pedego Electric Bikes.

Pedego was founded in 2008 by Don DiCostanzo, CEO, and Terry Sherry, CFO, who loved to cycle but hated hills. They designed the first Pedego Bike on a cocktail napkin, and it shipped in 2009. Pedego sales are up 40 percent over 2016, with 2017 sales expected to be in excess of $20 million. Pedego is the Number 1 electric bike brand according to Navigant Research. Pedego has also been featured in Inc. Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.
